Hydro-Element™, a Canine component of HydroHoof, combines a Smart Dog Collar, a Human Wearable, and HE Beacon™ identity and location-awareness technology. It speaks in Your Voice, tracks through rain, water, and miles of silence, and brings your hero home.
Dogs run toward danger without a second thought. They pull people from water, track the missing, and guard the families they love. Yet few people stop to ask what happens when the dog disappears. Sonya Hutchison could not stop asking. When the hero goes missing, who comes for the hero?
Her answer began with a horse named Equinox and a simple curiosity about what an animal’s body could say when no one stood nearby. It grew into Hydro-Element™, the canine component of her HydroHoof ecosystem. Sonya built Hydro-Element™ to speak, to listen, and to bring dogs home the same day.
In this interview, Sonya explains how prevention, voice communication, and solar assisted endurance set Hydro-Element™ apart.
You built HydroHoof around a smart dog collar that works on land and in water. Can you introduce yourself and share what started this idea?
Thank you for having me. My name is Sonya Hutchison, inventor, founder, and CEO of HydroHoof LLC. One thing I’d like to clarify is that HydroHoof is not the smart dog collar itself. HydroHoof is an autonomous intelligent organism ecosystem whose technologies communicate and work together as a unified system.
Hydro-Element™ is the canine component within that ecosystem. It combines a smart dog collar, a human wearable, and HE Beacon™ identity and location-awareness technology to help maintain communication between a dog and its handler on land and in water.
The inspiration was deeply personal. I began thinking about what happens when a dog becomes lost, swept away by water, stolen, or separated during an emergency. Finding my dog a few days later wasn’t good enough. The goal was to find my dog that same day.
But there was an even bigger question that stayed with me. A dog will risk its life to save its owner, but who saves the dog? Search-and-rescue dogs, service dogs, working dogs, and family companions help humans every day. I wanted to create a system that could
- Strengthen communication
- Improve location awareness
- And help protect the animals that protect us
HydroHoof began with hands-on problem solving, according to your site. What problem did you first set out to solve?
HydroHoof began with Equinox, a horse. As a caretaker, I found myself asking a simple but important question. And that was: How do I learn about my horse when I am not around? What could her body tell me?
The first problem I set out to solve was an intelligent horse watering system for, my horse.
I wanted regular updates on an animal’s condition rather than waiting for a health issue to become obvious. Equinox was paired with RFID technology, and that led me to explore how intelligent systems could help caregivers better understand animal welfare, behavior, hydration, stress, and environmental conditions.
My goal was not simply to provide water. My goal was to support preventive care rather than reactive care. I wanted to know when an animal might be
- Stressed and overworked
- Struggling with environmental conditions
- Or experiencing changes that deserved attention before they became serious welfare concerns
As I continued developing the system, I realized the same challenge existed across many species. That realization became the foundation of HydroHoof. Later, it evolved from an intelligent horse watering solution into a larger ecosystem focused on animal welfare, environmental awareness, communication, safety, and intelligent care.
Your Hydro-Element™ K-9 system pairs a human wearable with a smart dog collar. Why did you design the two devices to work together?
Dogs are more than companions. They are protectors, rescuers, workers, service animals, and loyal members of our families. Many dogs willingly risk their lives to help a human in danger. As I developed Hydro-Element™, I kept returning to one question: If a dog saves a human, who saves the dog?
That question drove the design of the human wearable and smart dog collar as a connected system. The wearable allows the handler to remain connected to the dog. On the other hand, the collar allows the dog to remain connected to the handler. Together with HE Beacon™ location-awareness technology, the system helps maintain communication, awareness, and recovery capabilities if the dog becomes separated, lost, swept away by water, or encounters an emergency situation.
My goal was to ensure that after the hero completes the mission, we could find the hero, too. Hydro-Element™ was designed to help protect the animals that dedicate their lives to protecting us.
Most people picture a smart dog collar as a simple GPS tracker. How does yours go further?
Most GPS collars primarily track a dog’s location. Hydro-Element™ is a preventive communication and safety system.
For example, if a handler sees a dog
- Approaching danger
- Moving toward unsafe water conditions
- Entering hazardous terrain
- Becoming separated
The handler can communicate using familiar voice commands such as “Stop,” “Wait,” “Stay,” or “Come.” The goal is to help prevent emergencies before they occur rather than simply react after they happen.
Hydro-Element™ combines a canine command collar, a human wearable, and HE Beacon™ identity and location-awareness technology. Together, the system supports communication, recovery, and situational awareness.
Another important difference is endurance. Dogs don’t stop working because a battery runs low. Search-and-rescue dogs, ranch dogs, livestock guardians, hunting dogs, and outdoor companions often operate in remote environments far from power sources. Hydro-Element™ incorporates solar-assisted backup power to support extended operation in rural and off-grid environments where reliability matters most.
A dog will risk its life to save a human. My goal was to create a system that helps protect the animal that protects us. Rather than simply asking, “Where is my dog?”. I wanted to ask, “How do I keep my dog safe, connected, and recoverable.?”
You call the system mission grade rather than a consumer gadget. What separates the two in practice?
To me, a consumer gadget performs a limited function. A mission-grade system helps people and animals operate safely in real-world environments where reliability matters.
We designed Hydro-Element™ to function across land, water, rain, snow, and rural environments. It incorporates solar-assisted backup power, wireless connectivity, HE Beacon™ location awareness, and communication capabilities intended to support endurance beyond typical consumer use.
What also makes the system mission grade is its focus on prevention and welfare. Through the HydroHoof application, caregivers can review information that helps them better understand their dog’s activities, movement patterns, hydration history, environmental conditions, and overall welfare. My original question was simple: What could an animal’s body tell me when I am not there?
Mission grade also means supporting the entire team. If a family is hiking, camping, exploring, or operating in remote environments and members become separated, location awareness can help them reconnect. The same principle applies to handlers and working dogs. If rescuers locate only one member of the team, the system can assist in identifying the location of the missing companion, whether that is a person or an animal, helping accelerate recovery efforts when time matters most.
Whether the user is a family companion animal, a service dog, a search-and-rescue K-9, or an outdoor adventure partner, the goal is to help everyone return safely. Hydro-Element™ does not simply answer, “Where is my dog?” It helps answer, “Where is every member of my team, and are they safe?”
A dog will risk its life to save a human. Hydro-Element™ was designed with the belief that we should be equally committed to protecting the animal that protects us.
Rain, swimming, hiking, and walking each trigger a different mode on your smart dog collar. How does the collar switch between them automatically?
As the inventor, I design Hydro-Element™ as an autonomous intelligent system rather than a simple tracking collar. It operates in what I call Duality Mode, continuously monitoring environmental conditions, movement patterns, and activity changes. As the dog transitions from walking to hiking, encounters rain, or enters the water, the system automatically recognizes those changes and adjusts its operating mode without requiring owner intervention.
The goal is to reduce the need for manual settings and allow the collar to respond intelligently to real-world conditions. Whether the dog is on land, in water, or moving through changing environments, Hydro-Element™ adapts automatically and maintains awareness, communication, and monitoring throughout the activity.
Water punishes electronics. What was the hardest challenge in building a collar that handles swimming?
Honestly, swimming isn’t the hardest challenge. Electronics have operated in water for decades. The challenge is bringing together modern sensors, communication systems, power management, and autonomous decision-making into a device that can adapt to a dog’s real-world lifestyle. We designed Hydro-Element™ to pair and use it with today’s technology to create a more intelligent companion system rather than simply another waterproof tracker.
Your smart dog collar uses GPS for real time location and recall. How does that help a handler during a scary moment?
The purpose is simple: to help reunite a pet with its owner as quickly as possible. During a scary moment, every minute matters. Hydro-Element’s GPS provides real-time location awareness so owners can locate their dog immediately instead of searching for hours, days, or potentially never finding them at all.
My inspiration came from a simple question: why should a family have to wait days to learn where their dog ended up? I wanted a system that could help owners respond the moment a dog becomes lost, separated, or disoriented. The goal is not to find a dog days later. The goal is to help bring them home the same day.
A voice AI sends handler commands and safety cues through the smart dog collar. How does that work in the field?
In the field, the objective is to extend the handler’s voice beyond normal speaking distance. If a dog is approaching a hazard, moving too far ahead on a trail, or becoming separated from its owner, Hydro-Element™ can deliver familiar voice commands and safety cues directly through the collar.
Dogs are often trained to respond to commands such as “Stop,” “Wait,” “Sit,” “Stay,” or “Come.” By combining voice communication with location awareness, the system helps maintain contact between the handler and the animal, even when visual contact is limited.
My philosophy is preventive first. If you can alert or redirect a dog before it enters a dangerous situation, you may be able to prevent an injury, a loss, or a rescue situation altogether. The goal is to give the handler another way to communicate with the dog when every second matters.
Environmental sensors track terrain, weather, and hazards. What does a dog owner actually see when a hazard appears?
Hydro-Element™ is first and foremost a location-awareness and recovery system. Owners should already know the weather before heading out. The value of the system is helping owners know where their dog is in real time so they can respond quickly if the dog becomes lost, separated, or enters a potentially dangerous situation. The goal is to find the dog immediately, not days later.
Solar endurance and emergency mode keep the smart dog collar running off grid. Why did you prioritize that?
prioritized solar endurance and emergency mode because dogs do not always stay within the boundaries of reliable connectivity. A lost dog can travel miles from home, cross into rural areas, enter forests, trails, farmland, or other locations where internet and cellular coverage may become limited or unavailable.
Many tracking devices work around the assumption that the dog will be found quickly and that connectivity will remain available. But if the animal remains missing for an extended period, battery life and communication become critical. A tracker provides little value if it stops working before the dog is recovered.
We designed Hydro-Element™ with the understanding that recovery efforts may last longer than we expect. The solar-assisted system helps extend operational capability, while emergency mode preserves essential functions that can continue assisting with location and recovery efforts. My goal was to create a system that keeps helping the owner when the search moves beyond normal conditions and into situations where a dog may be many miles from home and outside traditional coverage areas.
Simply put, a lost dog does not stop being lost because the battery dies or because the internet disappears. The system should continue doing everything possible to help bring that animal home.
Long-range connectivity works wherever signal exists. How do you prepare a family for areas with no signal?
While location awareness is important when a dog becomes lost, my personal belief is that prevention is even more important than recovery. Some of the most serious situations happen in a matter of seconds, long before a dog is ever considered missing.
For example, if a dog is off leash and begins running toward another animal, a person, a roadway, or another potential hazard, the ability to communicate directly with that dog can become extremely valuable. If the dog can recognize and respond to its owner’s voice, a simple command such as “Stop,” “Wait,” “Sit,” or “Come,” it may help prevent an incident before it occurs.
We designed Hydro-Element™ around the idea that communication can help maintain the bond between a dog and its handler, even when distance separates them. In my view, the most important moment is not after something goes wrong. It’s the moment before it goes wrong. If technology can help a handler regain control and avoid an accident, injury, or confrontation, then it has already accomplished something meaningful.
The best outcome is not finding the dog after a problem occurs. The best outcome is preventing the problem from occurring in the first place.
You design the system for families, professionals, and responders. Who needs a smart dog collar like this most?
I believe the need is equal among dog owners because every dog deserves discovery, protection, and care.
Who needs Hydro-Element™ most often depends on the situation at that moment. For example,
- It could be a search-and-rescue team looking for a working dog in an emergency
- A family whose pet has slipped out of the yard
- Or an owner jogging with their dog on the beach off leash.
However, the common ground is that people want to stay connected to the animals they love. I designed Hydro-Element™ around the idea that no matter where a dog goes, their owner should have a way to locate them, communicate with them, and respond before a situation becomes a tragedy.
After all, dogs are loyal companions who would risk their lives for us, and I believe we should do everything we can to protect them in return.
Working dogs face harsh terrain every day. What lessons from K-9 handlers shaped your design?
The biggest lesson was simple: every handler wants their dog to return home safely.
Whether it’s a working K-9, a search-and-rescue dog, a service animal, or a family companion, these dogs often enter situations where conditions can change quickly. The bond between the handler and the dog is built on trust, communication, and reliability.
That understanding influenced many aspects of Hydro-Element™. I wanted to improve location awareness, extend communication between the handler and the dog, and provide additional tools that may help prevent an incident before it occurs. My focus was never just tracking a dog’s movements. My focus was helping the dog return safely to the person waiting for them.
At the end of the day, the technology serves a simple purpose: the dog goes out, does its job, and comes home safely.
Your site also lists Element Diving as part of the platform. How does underwater technology connect to your dog collar?
Element Diving™ and Hydro-Element™ share a common foundation, but they are for different users. Hydro-Element™ is for dogs and their handlers, while Element Diving™ is for human divers.
Element Diving™ is a wearable watch-like device to help divers communicate with their dive partner or support vessel underwater at depths of up to 150 feet. The system focuses on underwater awareness, communication, and safety for people operating in challenging environments.
The connection is the underlying philosophy behind both technologies: maintaining communication, awareness, and location when traditional methods become difficult or impossible. Whether it’s a diver beneath the surface or a dog separated from its owner, the goal is the same, to help individuals stay connected and improve the likelihood of a safe return.
At its core, Hydro-Element™ helps maintain communication between a dog and its handler, while Element Diving™ helps maintain communication between divers and their support teams. Both were inspired by the importance of knowing where someone is and helping them get home safely.
Your site’s description mentions NVIDIA-powered technology. What role does that processing power play inside a smart dog collar?
We envisioned Hydro-Element™ as more than a GPS tracker. The role of advanced processing is to help the system interpret information, recognize patterns, and support intelligent decision-making rather than simply collecting data.
For example, the system may need to process location information, activity changes, environmental inputs, voice commands, and historical behavior patterns. Advanced computing can help transform raw information into meaningful insights that support communication, awareness, and preventive care.
My goal has never been to put technology on a dog for the sake of technology. The goal is to create a smarter companion system that helps strengthen the connection between dogs and their handlers. Whether that means recognizing changes in behavior, assisting with recall, supporting location awareness, or helping owners respond more quickly to potential problems, processing power helps make those capabilities possible.
Simply put, GPS tells you where a dog is. Intelligent processing helps determine what may be happening and how to respond before a situation becomes an emergency.
The human wearable carries the system’s other half. What does a handler gain by wearing it?
Connectivity.
Hydro-Element™ was designed as a paired system, where the collar and wearable work together to maintain awareness between the animal and the handler. The wearable provides access to location, status, communication, and other mission-critical information when it matters most.
The concept can also extend beyond animals. If two people pair their wearables together, they can establish the same connected relationship and shared awareness. At its core, Hydro-Element™ is about maintaining connection between the individuals who matter to one another, whether that is a person and their dog or two people working, traveling, or responding together.
You built the system for real conditions like rain and unpredictable terrain. How do you test a smart dog collar outdoors?
Safety comes first. Before introducing any new technology into an open environment, testing should begin in a controlled setting where the dog’s behavior, the system’s performance, and the communication between the dog and handler can be evaluated safely.
As testing progresses, the environment can gradually become more challenging. The objective is to ensure the system performs as intended before relying on it in open or unfenced areas. A dog should never become the test subject for unnecessary risk.
My philosophy is simple: verify the technology in controlled conditions first, then expand testing as confidence in the system grows. Whether the goal is location awareness, communication, or recall, responsible testing helps ensure the technology supports the dog’s safety rather than creating new risks.
Ultimately, the purpose of Hydro-Element™ is not to encourage taking greater risks with a dog. It is to provide another layer of awareness and communication that helps the dog return home safely.
HydroHoof Sanctuary Nonprofit sits beside HydroHoof LLC. How do the two organizations connect?
HydroHoof LLC and HydroHoof Sanctuary share a common mission centered on improving the lives of animals, but they serve different purposes. The LLC focuses on developing technology, products, and systems designed to support animal welfare, communication, safety, monitoring, and preventive care. On the nonprofit side, the Sanctuary is dedicated to providing compassionate care, protection, rehabilitation, education, and long-term support for animals in need.
The connection is simple: the technology is inspired by the animals, and the sanctuary helps ensure the work remains grounded in real-world animal welfare needs. Each organization supports the broader mission from a different direction. One develops solutions, while the other focuses on stewardship and care.
My long-term vision is to create a future where innovation and compassion work together. Whether through technology, education, rescue efforts, or sanctuary programs, the goal remains the same: helping animals live safer, healthier, and more dignified lives.
Does the sanctuary’s mission influence how you build a smart dog collar? Where do you see that most?
Absolutely. The sanctuary influences how I think about animal welfare, awareness, and preventive care. While Hydro-Element™ is designed for individual dogs and their handlers, my long-term vision extends beyond a single animal.
As HydroHoof Sanctuary grows, caring for larger numbers of animals becomes a different challenge. That’s where another one of my inventions, Scout, comes into the picture. Scout is designed to assist with monitoring and locating animals across larger properties and livestock environments, providing caretakers with greater visibility and awareness across an entire population.
The connection is that both technologies are focused on the same goal: helping caretakers know where their animals are and identifying problems before they become emergencies. Hydro-Element™ approaches that challenge from the individual animal level, while Scout is designed to help at a larger scale.
Whether it’s a single dog wearing Hydro-Element™ or a future sanctuary caring for many animals, my mission remains the same: improve animal welfare through better awareness, communication, and preventive care.
Running a small business means wearing many hats. How do you split your time between the company and the nonprofit?
Because most of my projects operate within a unified ecosystem, the underlying technology, research, and administrative responsibilities often overlap. Being the inventor allows me to work efficiently across both the company and the nonprofit, since many of the concepts, systems, and long-term objectives are interconnected. While the missions differ, much of the planning, development, and operational work supports both organizations simultaneously.
Big brands already sell a smart dog collar. What makes your approach different for people who hike and swim?
Many existing smart dog collars focus on tracking a dog after it becomes lost. My approach is centered on prevention first and recovery second.
Hydro-Element™ is designed not only to help locate a dog, but also to help maintain communication between the owner, handler, and dog while they are outdoors. If a dog is moving toward danger, becoming separated on a trail, or entering a situation where immediate intervention is needed, the ability to deliver familiar voice commands through the system may help the handler regain the dog’s attention before an incident occurs.
I also designed Hydro-Element™ with rural environments in mind. Hikers, campers, hunters, ranchers, and outdoor enthusiasts often travel beyond urban areas where traditional connectivity can be less reliable. Features such as solar-assisted endurance and emergency operating modes are intended to help extend the system’s usefulness when recovery efforts take longer than expected.
The difference is that Hydro-Element™ is not just about finding a dog after something goes wrong. It’s about helping prevent the problem in the first place, while still providing location awareness if recovery becomes necessary.
What should a first time buyer expect when they start using your smart dog collar?
A first-time buyer should expect a simple setup process followed by increased awareness of their dog’s location, activity, and overall well-being. The goal of the smart collar is to provide pet owners with an added layer of safety, communication, and peace of mind. As they become familiar with the system, owners can use its features to better understand their dog’s routines, respond more quickly to potential concerns, and stay connected with their pet whether at home or away. Over time, the collar becomes a trusted tool that helps strengthen the bond between owner and dog through enhanced visibility and confidence in their pet’s safety.
Your site says the next chapter is coming. Where do you want your smart dog collar to go?
The next evolution of Hydro-Element™ is integration with my latest drone concept. My vision is for autonomous drones to locate, monitor, and track Hydro-Element™ collars and livestock operating within the HydroHoof ecosystem. Rather than relying on a single device, the system becomes a connected network where collars, wearables, drones, and environmental intelligence work together. The goal is to improve awareness, animal safety, welfare monitoring, and location tracking across larger properties and remote environments.
As we wrap up, what should dog owners know about the future of the smart dog collar? What do you hope it protects most?
I want dog owners to know that the future of the smart dog collar is more than tracking location. It’s about preserving the bond between people and the animals they love. With Hydro-Element’s voice communication capabilities, a lost dog can still hear a familiar voice and know that their owner is searching for them. That reassurance can make a tremendous difference in a stressful situation. My hope is that technology protects companionship, safety, and the chance for every lost pet to make it home. From the beginning, the goal has always been simple: bringing the pet home.
Let’s Wrap It!
Thank you, Sonya, for sharing the story behind Hydro-Element™ with such honesty and heart. You answers took us from a horse named Equinox to a mission built on one question: who saves the dog? We loved your clarity on prevention, your care for working dogs and their handlers, and your vision for Scout, drones, and HydroHoof Sanctuary Nonprofit. The idea that a lost dog can still hear a familiar voice stayed with us most.
Thank you again, Sonya, for showing us what happens when invention serves the animals who serve us. We wish you every success as Hydro-Element™ grows, and we look forward to the day it brings more dogs home.
