Custom Cat Scratchers, One Accountable Partner, and Zero Surprises from the First Sketch to the Final Delivery.
A cat scratcher looks simple until a brand tries to make one overseas. Thin board, vague specifications, and surprise costs can sink a first launch. Hallucy Jiang knows those risks well, and she helps brands avoid them. As founder of Get You Want, she connects brands with a trusted factory in Qingdao.
In this interview, she explains how custom cat scratchers move from sketch to shipment. Importers, online sellers, and pet retailers will find practical answers for their own plans.
Thank you for joining PETBIZS, Hallucy. You built Get You Want to link brands with factories making custom cat scratchers and pet furniture. Can you introduce yourself and share how it began?
I’m Hallucy Jiang, founder of Get You Want, the sourcing business under Precious Hallucy Company Limited in Hong Kong. I have worked in sourcing in China for more than ten years, starting with the foreign trade of fire fighting grooved fittings and valves, serving more than 300 clients across six continents.
Get You Want was founded when I noticed that brands in new categories needed exactly what my previous industrial clients had always needed: a sourcing partner on the ground who manages factories, quality, and logistics as if it were their own team.
Your company reports ten years of sourcing and more than three hundred clients across six continents. What lessons from that track record shape how you work today?
Three lessons.
- First, the factory you choose matters more than the price you negotiate; a reliable partner saves more than any discount ever will.
- Second, quality has to be inspected, not assumed: we check raw materials, production, and every finished piece.
- Third, be the single point of contact; when something goes wrong, the client should only ever need to call me.
Your sourcing work began with fire fighting equipment. Why did you add pet furniture in 2026?
The market for traditional fire fighting products is now fairly saturated. I noticed that pet brands have been gaining market share in recent years. They also want what my industrial clients have always wanted:
- Lightweight products
- Customized design
- Reliable quality
- Transparent pricing
Corrugated pet furniture, especially cat scratchers, is a category where design and manufacturing genuinely matter, and my sourcing model fits it very well. So I partnered with a Qingdao factory that has spent nearly ten years perfecting the production of corrugated cat scratchers and pet furniture.
You call Get You Want a sourcing partner, not a factory. How does that role work for brands ordering custom cat scratchers?
The factory makes the product; I make sure the whole process runs smoothly for the brand.
- First, I audit the factory’s production and customization capabilities to ensure they match the client’s requirements.
- Second, I translate the buyer’s requirements into production specifications, helping the factory fully understand what the client wants.
- Third, I run quality control at every stage and handle freight, customs, and delivery.
The brand therefore works with one accountable partner instead of juggling a factory, a QC agent, and a forwarder, with a transparent, performance-based service fee and no hidden markups.
Your partner factory in Qingdao has made corrugated cat scratchers for almost ten years. What does that experience bring to custom cat scratchers today?
Nearly ten years of focus on one category, a facility spanning 5,500 square meters, and 20 CNC engraving machines. That experience shows up in the details: cleaner cuts, tighter joints, and the engineering judgment to tell a buyer when a design won’t hold up before we cut a single board.
That factory offers OEM and ODM services from customer samples or designs. How does a buyer turn an idea into custom cat scratchers?
It starts with whatever the buyer has: a sketch, a photo, or a physical sample. Our engineers turn it into technical drawings, then we produce a physical prototype for the buyer to approve. Only after sign off does production begin, with inspections on raw materials, the production run, and every finished piece.
Buyers can customize shapes, prints, sizes, and packaging. Which choice surprises first time customers the most?
Most first time buyers tend to underestimate what print and finish do to a product. The same scratcher can look like a toy or like designer furniture depending on the surface design. Once they see their own branding on a well finished piece, the conversation shifts from price to design.
Your team favors corrugated board over loose sisal near laptops. Why does corrugated work so well for custom cat scratchers?
Loose sisal sheds fibers, and nobody wants fibers drifting into a laptop keyboard. On the other hand, corrugated board is clean, holds its shape, and takes print beautifully. Our laptop scratcher even doubles as a keyboard decoy; it gives the cat a satisfying place to scratch right where the owner works, so the real keyboard survives.
Your cardboard cat houses balance entrance angles, warmth, and roof strength. What matters most when a buyer evaluates one?
All three have to work together, but structural integrity comes first. A cat house that sags or collapses is a failed product no matter how warm it is. We engineer entrance angles for easy access, the enclosed shape for warmth, and a roof that holds an adult cat’s weight. Buyers should test a sample under load before committing to volume.
Your laptop scratcher doubles as a keyboard decoy for remote workers. How did that idea guide your approach to custom cat scratchers?
Remote workers kept telling us their cats walk across the keyboard during video calls. Instead of fighting the behavior, we designed for it: a scratcher that sits beside the laptop and lures the cat away from the keys. That principle of designing around real cat behavior, not against it, now guides everything we make.
Your modern cat trees use tool free joints instead of Velcro or snaps. Why did you choose that design?
Velcro wears out and snaps break; a cat tree should survive years of daily climbing. Tool free interlocking joints stay tight, assemble in minutes without any hardware, and there is nothing for the cat to chew off. Fewer parts means fewer things that can go wrong inside a flat pack box, and it also means the cat is safer.
You use plant starch adhesive and offer emission data on request. Why does air quality matter for custom cat scratchers?
Cats live nose first in these products, where they scratch, rub, and sleep on them for hours every day.
Plant starch adhesive is nontoxic and low odor, and we share emission data on request so brands can verify air quality themselves. For an indoor product a pet practically lives on, that transparency isn’t optional.
You also source corrugated cat couches that look like furniture. How do you make cardboard feel like part of a living room?
It comes down to proportion, print, and finish.
We design couches with the clean lines of modern furniture and use high quality printed surfaces, so the piece reads as décor rather than a pet accessory. The goal is a scratcher guests don’t notice until the cat starts using it.
Buyers can request load, thermal, shear, and emission test documentation. Your site calls many figures design targets, not certified results. How should they read those numbers for custom cat scratchers?
Read them as engineering intentions, and then ask for the paperwork.
Our site labels many figures as design targets because that is honestly what they are: the specification we build and test against. Buyers can request load, thermal, shear, and emission test documentation for their order, and we encourage them to. A number you can verify beats a certificate you can’t.
Your team inspects raw materials, production, and every finished piece. Where do defects usually appear first?
Usually at the very start: the raw board. Warping, moisture content, or inconsistent flute quality will show up later as weak joints or poor print. That is why we inspect incoming materials before cutting. Catching it there costs far less than catching it in a finished pallet.
Small and mixed orders help growing brands avoid strict minimums. How do they work for custom cat scratchers?
A growing brand rarely needs a full container of one SKU. We combine sizes, prints, or even product types into mixed orders so they can test the market without strict minimums. Flat pack design keeps the freight math friendly even at smaller volumes.
Flat pack design shrinks freight volume, and you handle customs and delivery. What do importers worry about most?
Duties and landed cost, mostly, followed closely by damage in transit. Flat pack design shrinks freight volume dramatically, and because we handle customs clearance and delivery, the importer sees one landed price instead of a chain of surprises.
First time importers often feel nervous about China sourcing. What mistakes do you see with custom cat scratchers?
Two, usually.
- First, choosing on price alone, because the cheapest quote almost always hides thinner board or skipped QC.
- Second, vague specifications: ‘make it like the picture’ without dimensions, materials, or tolerances is how you get a container of almost right products.
We encourage to write everything down, approve a physical sample, and inspect before shipment.
You charge a transparent, performance based service fee with no hidden markups. Why does that model matter to clients?
Because it aligns our incentive with the client’s. We earn a clear service fee tied to performance, not a hidden margin on the product, so when we negotiate a better factory price or catch a defect, the client keeps the benefit. No markups buried in unit prices means the client always knows exactly what they are paying for.
Online sellers, pet retailers, and growing brands fit your model well. What do they ask for most in custom cat scratchers?
Lead time, minimum order quantity, and how custom they can really go, in that order.
- Online sellers want to test designs quickly
- Retailers want packaging that survives their supply chain
- Growing brands want to know we can scale with them
The answer to all three is usually the same: flexible MOQs, real OEM/ODM, and honest timelines.
Your designs balance cat behavior with structural strength. Who checks that balance before production?
Both sides check it.
Our factory engineers validate the structure, including load paths, joint strength, and stability, and my team validates it against real cat behavior before we approve a sample. If a design looks beautiful but a cat won’t use it, or a cat loves it but it wobbles, it goes back to the drawing board.
You encourage buyers to visit factories and coordinate their itinerary. Why does that matter for custom cat scratchers?
Photos and video calls only go so far. When a buyer walks the floor, sees the CNC machines, watches incoming board being inspected, and meets the people who will make their product, the relationship changes.
I coordinate the itinerary so they see everything that matters in one focused visit; it is the fastest way to build real confidence.
Modern interiors now shape what pet parents want to buy. How are custom cat scratchers changing as a result?
Pet furniture is leaving the ‘pet corner’ and joining the living room. Buyers now ask for pieces that match modern interiors, including neutral palettes, clean geometry, and materials that photograph well. Customization is shifting from novelty shapes to refined design: the scratcher has to earn its place visually, not just functionally.
A brand wants to launch its first cat furniture line. What advice would you give about custom cat scratchers?
Start with one hero product, not a full line. Pick the design your customer will photograph, order a small mixed run, and let real sales tell you what to expand. And choose your partner the way you’d choose a business partner. Visit if you can, verify their quality systems, and never skip the pre shipment inspection.
As we wrap up, where do you see custom cat scratchers heading next? What do you hope Get You Want becomes?
I see the category splitting: disposable scratchers on one side, and design led pet furniture on the other, with pieces built to last and to be seen. We want to be the sourcing partner behind that second group: the team brands call when they need a beautiful idea turned into a product that ships, clears customs, and delights the end customer.
